The game was released by Tomy in 1981, under a number of different names depending on the country. The U.S version is titled ‘Pac Man’, whereas the U.K version is labelled as ‘Puckman’ as it was also known in Japan.
A version of the game called ‘Munchman’ was also sold by the company Grandstand at the time, although the labelling on the reverse of the machine says ‘Tomy’ and it identical in every way other than the name.
The Australian release of the game was known as ‘Pacman-1’, and produced under the company name Futuretronics’.
The game is set in a bright yellow round plastic case which resembles the game’s character, and features four directional buttons instead of a joystick. It also features two difficulty settings – ‘AMA’ (amateur) and ‘PRO’ (professional).
Due to the game’s programming, the character of Pac-Man can only eat the dots as it travels from left to right across the screen.
